Questions to ask before renting a dumpster

Ask every company these questions, and get the answers in writing (email or text) before you book.

  1. How many tons are included? Most prices include a weight limit, often 2 to 6 tons depending on size. Ask for the exact number for the size you're booking.
  2. What's the overage charge per ton? Get the exact dollar figure. Ask how it's weighed and whether you'll get the scale ticket.
  3. How many days are included? Ask whether delivery and pickup days count.
  4. What's the fee per extra day? Ask whether you can extend, and whether you need to call ahead.
  5. Do I need a permit, and who gets it? On your driveway, usually no. On the street, sidewalk or alley, many cities require one. Ask who applies and who pays.
  6. What items are banned or cost extra? Common ones: tires, mattresses, appliances, paint, batteries, hazardous waste, and dirt, concrete or rock in standard bins.
  7. Are you the hauler, or a broker? A broker takes your order and passes it to a local company. Ask who will actually deliver the bin, and whose fee schedule applies.
  8. Any other fees? Fuel, delivery distance, "trip" or no-haul fee if the bin can't be reached, relocation, overfilling, or damage fees.
